Proposed Social Housing in Cannon Street

Affordable Housing

A welcome by-product of the surge in building development in the town has been the requirement placed on developers and landowners to make land available for social housing at up to 50% of the number of houses or dwellings being constructed for private sale.

Consequently a large number of social housing or affordable housing units are now being constructed in the town with more such developments planned. One particular scheme which is attracting attention from the Society is the development in Cannon Street on this side of the old school. Many in the town have questioned whether an historic building such as the old school should be demolished to make way for such a dense development of flats.

in particular the architecture of the proposed building has attracted criticism as being particularly tall compared with surrounding buildings and with architectural featuressuch as a rounded turret sprinkled liberally on to the building. The Society has opposed the current building on these grounds and will monitor future proposals

The Society's View

The Society particularly welcomes the building of much-needed social housing in the Town which hopefully will help to preserve the balance of housing stock so vital to a healthy community.

However it is important that all developments, even those for social housing, are of high quality and are not over-dense as many feel the Canon Street development may be.

In particular the Canon Street development appears from the drawings to form a rather imposing facade generally out of character with the area.

Finally it is regrettable that despite the good use that the site is being put to, it involves the demolition of an historic Victorian building which could have been adapted for a much-needed community facility such as a new Register Office following the regrettable departure of the previous Register Office to Ringwood.
